kayaking…? How is the kayaking and canoeing in Seward, Alaska?
Dec 012009

Theyre All Around Us! Who knew when I woke up on this Thursday morning that it was going to be an extraordinary day that would produce a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was a beautiful afternoon with calm seas; so, Allan from West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals www.westcoastoutdoor.ca and I decided to take the Hobie kayaks for a spin. Heading out towards Secretary Island just off Sooke, BC in the Juan de Fuca Strait, we got word there was a large pod of Orcas close by. We were so excited …

what a dream come true for yall! i just moved away from victoria, and miss the whales tremendously. i got about that close to one of them in the inflatable whale watching boats, but for them to swim under you, playin with you?! INCREDIBLE! and you’re just chillin’ in flip flops… righteous, man!

  5. dawance88 says:

Your balls must be made of steel to be able to do this! Could you imagine getting flipped over?!

I’m totally envious. That part just after 6 minutes where they swim under you is amazing. Has anyone had the nads to actually swim with them yet?

  11. odysseusnissan says:

No documented Orca attacks on man(except in captivity, sea world) in the history of the world.

  12. Turppa21 says:

  13. Turppa21 says:

I would SHIT my pants, just because of the pure size of them.

What an experience 6:10 must have been. I’m gazed alone from watching this vid

  16. DiscoverSooke says:

I haven’t heard of a killer whale attacking boats of any size, however I would think it’s a safe bet that they would protect other members of the pod or young orca if they felt threatened and if that was the case, might do something.

I’ve NEVER heard of an Orca intentionally attacking people. There are a couple of trainers I’ve heard that have been killed because the whale was “playing” with them, brought them to the bottom of the tank in their moutn and they’ve drowned. But they weren’t upset.

have killer whalles ever been known to attack small boats or feed on people? cus I keep seeing vids like this and they just swim past them.

I do a lot extreme sports but I would be scared shitless in a situation like that. Wild animals freak me out, wild animals in open water really freak me out.

i was at the marina in august 2009 its so good

  23. DiscoverSooke says:

Sooke is on Vancouver Island, about 40 minutes west of Victoria on Hwy. 14. The island in the background is Secretary (Donaldson) Island and is about 2 kilometeres from the mouth of Sooke Harbour.

Your experience sounds quite amazing and to see a Humpback that close would be very scary. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  24. lkr1204 says:

where’s sooke island? johnstone strait? i went on a multi-day kayaking tour there in august and had a very similar experience with the a pod and humpbacks-i think i was shaken up more than u in this vid when the humpback came up a few feet from my kayak lol, awesome footage!
