This is the middle of the road quality and pricing for recreational kayaking:
Kayak $700
paddle $200
PFD $100
helmet $100
dry bag $100
total $1,200

Obviously, you can pay much - much more... but you don't need to.
* above doesn't include such things as: kayak anchor, sail package, tow or dock lines, cart, trailer or roof rack, seat pads, hatch kits, spray shirts, cockpit covers, or drink holders... etc. etc.

You could probably get it all on E-bay for half the price.

I would however, NOT buy my PFD on E-bay... I have (and highly recommend) a semi-custom fit inflatable PFD - by that, I mean find a good quality marine store that has a huge selection from tiny to giant size and in half sizes... try on a dozen or more before you pick the one that fits best. The self inflatables are much like wearing a light vest, much cooler, much more comfortable... In fact, I have (on several occassions) stopped to have breakfast at a dockside restaurant and even driven to the store - forgetting I had it on.

Good luck,
Happy and Safe Boating,
John
